IEEE R10 Student Research Paper Contest

Introduction

The IEEE Region 10 Student Activities Committee recognizes the importance of research and disseminating the findings for advancing science and technology. Researching, writing, and presenting a paper provides students with invaluable early experience communicating ideas related to their professional fields. The contest allows IEEE Student members to exercise and improve written communication skills.

Purpose

The R10 Student Research Paper contest aims to improve IEEE student members’ written communication skills and report novel and original research results to the science & technology community. The contest will facilitate recognizing these skills and encourage other student members to develop technical and written communication skills.

Scope

There shall be three research areas for the competition:

(a) Micro, Power and Energy, and Biomedical Circuits,

(b) Instrumentation, AI, and Robotics, and

(c) Communications, Signal Processing, and Networking

The best paper for each category shall be awarded a cash prize.

Eligibility

    • Open to all active IEEE Student Members and IEEE Graduate Student Members in electrical engineering, electronics, computer science, or any other fields of interest of an IEEE Society and are currently enrolled in a course at a recognized educational institute.
    • The contest is open only to active IEEE Student Members and IEEE Graduate Student Members in Region 10. The papers may be on any engineering subject in the field of interest of IEEE (within the scope of IEEE transactions) and the above-identified research areas.
    • The student must be the paper’s first author and principal contributor.
    • The number of authors for one paper is limited to 3. All the authors must be students, and the first author must be a student member of the IEEE. Supervisors are not allowed to participate in the contest.
    • The combined contribution from all other co-authors should be no more than 50%. The first author would be required to indicate the estimated contributions of co-authors in terms of percentage.
    • The presented work should be recent and studied within the year 2024.
    • Papers submitted to this contest should not have been published in any other publication. If already published, then the paper will be DISQUALIFIED.
    • Note that you may submit your work for publication despite the contest submission. Already published papers are not considered.
    • Along with the paper submission, a duly completed “entry form” should be submitted, proving the details of all the authors.
    • Any of the following must endorse the submission: the Section Chair, Section Student Activities Chair, Student Branch Counselor, or the Head of the Department/School by signing the endorsement section of the “entry form.”
    • All the paper’s authors should declare the submission by signing the declaration section of the “entry form.” The inclusion of additional authors after the winner announcement is discouraged.
    • The paper and the duly completed “entry form” should be submitted via the “SUBMIT NOW” link at this page’s bottom. Please download the “entry form” from here.

Format

    • Submissions must follow the standard IEEE Conference Proceedings template, available at https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates.html.
    • The papers must be limited to a maximum of 6 pages in length. Papers not in the described format will be rejected.
    • The paper should explain the significance of the presented work and provide a well-structured, clear, and concise presentation of the subject matter, including an abstract, introduction, main body, and conclusion with supporting tables and figures and adequate references.
    • Appendices: Detailed mathematical proofs, development of equations, etc., which are subordinate to the main argument in the body of the paper, should be given in the appendices, with reference in the main text.
    • NOTE:  Author names, affiliations, and email addresses should not be included in the submitted paper (to facilitate a blind review process).

Judging Panel

    • The papers will be judged for the technical content, innovation, practical implementation, references, and overall presentation by a panel/panel of judges.
    • The judging panel/panels will represent expertise in the technical fields of the papers. Members of the IEEE R10 Student Activities Committee are ineligible to serve as judging panel members.
    • A judging panel member shall not evaluate a paper from his/her Section or educational institute. Judging panel members shall declare any possible conflicts of interest when assessing a paper.
    • The decision by the judging panel, as accepted by the R10 Director, will be the final decision, and no appeal against the decision will be entertained.

Assessment Criteria

At least three or more judges will review each paper for:

Written presentation (worth 40%) with the following scoring criteria:

    • Concise, informative abstract
    • The flow of ideas and integration of literature to support purpose, approach, and findings.
    • Adequacy of the conclusion
    • Compliance with paper format guidelines (IEEE Format)
    • Clarity and direction in exposition
    • Grammar, spelling, style, and choice of words

The subject matter (worth 60%) with the following scoring criteria:

    • The originality of ideas, experimental procedures, processes, results, or conclusions due mainly to the primary author
    • Originality in analysis, interpretation, and inference restatement based upon contributing authors’ work.
    • Quality of technical content
    • Factual and technical accuracy

Prizes

A total of THREE WINNERS will be chosen, one for each research area. The winner for each area will be awarded the following prize:

    • USD 500 cash prize
    • An e-certificate

In the case of co-authored papers, the prize money shall be divided equally among the student authors who are IEEE members and who will also have their names printed on the certificate.

The cash prize can assist the winners in publishing their scholarly works.

Record

The IEEE R10 Students Activities Coordinator will notify the result and winners by email to the R10 Sections on the R10 Website and R10 Newsletter. A record of winners is kept in R10 archives.
